Introducing the set of stamps "Vietnamese seas and islands (set 3): Seabirds and islands".
On June 24, 2022, the Ministry of Information and Communications will issue the stamp set "Vietnamese coastal and islands birds (series 3). The stamp set was released during the special ceremony of National Stamp Exhibition VIETSTAMPEX 2020 in Hanoi (Jun 24-26, 2022). This is the 3rd set regarding the topic "Vietnamese seas and islands" to promote the image of the country, its people and propagate the conservation of marine biodiversity in Vietnam, and at the same time contribute to the overall strength of Vietnam. united on the fronts of the struggle to protect and maintain the country's sovereignty over seas and islands. Previous stamp sets were issued in 2018 and 2020.
Located in Southeast Asia, on the East coast of the Indochina peninsula, Vietnam possesses over 3,260 km of coastline, more than 1 million km2 of continental shelf, more than 3,000 large and small islands and 2 offshore archipelagos: Hoang Sa and Truong Sa. The Vietnamese Party, State and people have always determined that seas and islands are of special strategic importance to the cause of national defense, construction and development.
Set of stamps "Vietnamese seas and islands (series 3): "Vietnamese coastal & islands birds" includes 04 samples and 01 souvenir sheet with face value of 4000 VND, 4000 VND, 4000 VND, 12000 VND and 15000 VND
Stamp size is 43 x 32 (mm) and souvenir sheet size is 110 x 70 (mm), they are designed by painters Nguyen Du and Pham Quang Dieu (Vietnam Post Corporation), provide on the postal network from June 24, 2022 to December 31, 2023 to introduce birds living on the seas and islands of Vietnam.
Issue of 4-1: Crested tern Thalasseus bergii (Lichtenstein, 1823)
A seabird in the gull family, nesting in dense colonies on coasts and islands in tropical and subtropical regions. The upper body (dorsal part) of the crested tern is gray, the lower part (belly part) is white, the bill is yellow, and the crest is black shaggy (which folds back in winter). The crested tern catches fish by diving into the water (usually in the sea). They also take advantage of unusual locations to nest, for example on the roofs of buildings and on artificial islands in salt fields or in sewage treatment ponds. Eggs and chicks are eaten by gulls and storks, and human fishing, hunting, and egg exploitation have caused a decline in the population of this species.
Issue of 4-2: Gallicrex cinerea chicken (Gmelin, 1789) The Field Chicken
(Gallicrex cinerea) is a species of bird in the Waterfowl family, the only species in the genus Gallicrex. Its breeding habitats are swamps, mudflats, flooded grasslands, and mangroves throughout Asia. They nest in a dry aboveground location in swamp vegetation. Dark brown above, lighter below, striped plumage with darker patches, yellow bill and blue legs. Black feathered chicks. They probe in mud or shallow water with their beaks, and choose food upon sight, feeding mainly on insects, small fish and seeds.
Issued of 4-3: Turn to Arenaria interpres (Linnaeus, 1758)
The seabird is a seabird, living in marshes, coastal sandy, coastal areas and marine wetlands. The body is about 22cm long, the wings have many prominent alternating colors, the short legs are orange, stout. During the breeding season the back is brownish, the plumage outside of the breeding season and chicks are more striped and mottled, the bill is black, and the legs are yellow-orange. They forage by flipping pebbles to find food.
Issue of 4-4: Gray-tailed pygmy Tringa brevipes (Vieillot, 1816)
They live in swamps, coastal sand, and rocky shores. The length is about 25cm, with the following characteristics: The upper body is only gray, the legs are yellow. During the breeding season, the neck, thorax, and flanks are thinly striped, revealing the entire gray upper body in flight. Usually live in small flocks.
Souvenir sheet: Red-footed madbird Sula sula (Linnaeus, 1766)
The red-footed falcon is a species of osprey in the family Sulidae, a group of sizable seabirds with red legs, but varied plumage. They are powerful birds in flight but slow when taking off or landing. The red-footed madbird is the smallest of the mad birds, measuring about 70cm long, with a wingspan of up to 1m. The red-footed madbird is a spectacular diver, plunging into the sea at high speed to catch prey. They mainly feed on small fish or squid gathered in groups near the surface.
